The Wyckoff method

The classic approach to how big capital builds a position in a range before a rally. Here is the accumulation schematic, its key events and the juiciest entry of all — the spring.

In short

The idea
Before a strong trend, big capital builds its position in a range — the accumulation phase.
Key events
Selling climax, automatic rally, secondary test, spring, sign of strength.
Best entry
The spring — a false break of the range low — or the last pullback before the rally (LPS).
Weak spot
The schematic is easy to "see" in any range after the fact.

The core idea

Richard Wyckoff described the market as the result of a large operator's actions. Such a participant can't buy their whole size at once — price would fly away. So they build the position inside a range while the crowd sells, then lead price higher. That range is called accumulation. Its mirror image before a decline is distribution.

Accumulation events

Wyckoff accumulation schematicSCARSTspringSOSLPS
The accumulation schematic: from the selling climax to the range breakout. Illustrative data.
  • SC (Selling Climax) — panic, a sharp drop on big volume.
  • AR (Automatic Rally) — sellers run out and price bounces. It sets the top of the range.
  • ST (Secondary Test) — a retest of the lows on lower volume: there are fewer sellers now.
  • Spring — a false break of the range low: the last buyers' stops get taken and big capital steps in.
  • SOS (Sign of Strength) — a confident rally to the range top and beyond on rising volume.
  • LPS (Last Point of Support) — the last pullback before the trend, an excellent entry.

How to trade it

01
Find a range after a decline
Accumulation appears after a strong downward move.
02
Mark the edges
The climax low and the automatic rally high.
03
Wait for the spring
A poke below the range low and a fast return inside, ideally on a volume spike.
04
Enter on the spring or the LPS
Aggressive — after the return into the range; conservative — on the pullback after the sign of strength.
05
Stop below the spring low
If price goes lower, the "accumulation" was just a continuation of the decline.

A Wyckoff spring and an SMC liquidity sweep are the same phenomenon described in different words: a poke through an obvious low, a stop grab and a reversal.

Common mistakes

Seeing accumulation in every range

A range in a downtrend may turn out to be redistribution before another leg down.

Buying in the middle of the range

The best spots are at the edges: the spring and the LPS.

Ignoring volume

Wyckoff is built on the link between price and volume. A spring without a volume reaction is weaker.
