Fibonacci retracements

The most popular tool for gauging how deep a pullback might go. Here is how to draw the grid properly, why the 0.5–0.618 zone works so often, and where Fibonacci turns into guesswork.

In short

What it is
A grid of 0.236, 0.382, 0.5, 0.618 and 0.786 levels between the start and end of an impulse.
Used for
Estimating how far price may pull back before the trend continues.
Strength
The 0.5–0.618 zone is a common place for a pullback to end in a healthy trend.
Weak spot
The grid is easy to fit to any chart after the fact.

What it is

The levels are drawn between the start and the end of an impulse — in an uptrend, from the low to the high. The grid splits the move into fractions: 23.6%, 38.2%, 50%, 61.8% and 78.6%. These numbers are linked to the Fibonacci sequence, but for trading something else matters more: millions of traders use them, so orders cluster right there.

Why the golden zone works

A 50–61.8% pullback is where price has given back about half the move but the trend is still intact. Buyers who missed the impulse wait for exactly that kind of discount. If the trend is healthy, that's the depth where they step in.

An impulse up, a pullback into the 0.5–0.618 zone and trend continuation. Illustrative data.
  • 0.236–0.382 — a shallow pullback, a sign of a very strong trend.
  • 0.5–0.618 — the standard pullback depth and the most popular entry zone.
  • 0.786 and deeper — the trend is under threat. If price goes past 100%, the impulse is cancelled.

How to use it

01
Find a clean impulse
A clear move from low to high without chop inside.
02
Draw on bodies or wicks — but consistently
What matters is one rule for every chart, otherwise you're fitting the result.
03
Look for confluence
A Fibonacci zone that lines up with a horizontal level, a moving average or the POC is stronger than a lone line.
04
Wait for a reaction
A rejection candle, a break of the small downward structure on the pullback.
05
Stop beyond 0.786 or the impulse low
Targets: a new high and the 1.272–1.618 extensions.

Fibonacci on its own is not a support level. It's a map of likely zones where you should look for confirmation. Entering "because it's 0.618" without a price reaction is a blind bet.

Common mistakes

Drawing the grid on every small wave

With dozens of grids on a chart, one of them always "works". Use clear impulses on your working timeframe.

Placing limit orders at a level without confirmation

In a strong reversal price slices through every level in a row.

Moving the grid after the fact

If you shift the grid so a level matches the turn, you're not analysing, you're fitting.
